VR Learning Lab – Week 49

week 49 was such an exciting week! All the interns were invited to come along to the VRdays, or the Immersive Tech Week, where we got to explore the latest in VR technology.

Monday I got to finish the Sinterklaas pack, with some challenges. For example, the bag I tried to make kept inflating itself inside of Blender. I also got to create a very interesting looking beard and experiment with the cloth brush in the sculpting tools as a result. But all with all I am quite happy with the end result

Furthermore, I also migrated my .space domain to my .com as it will expire in January: in the meantime I can redirect people to this new domain. I would love to rebuild my website at some point, but a direct copy will do nicely for now!

Tuesday I spend at Avans, cutting and pressing shirts with the company logo. It was quite a lot more work than I anticipated, as every single letter needed to be cut and then removed from the sticker, making sure the insides of the letters stayed behind like the tiny part inside the ‘A’. Fun to experiment with as I have not pressed shirts before on my own!

Unfortunately, I did place the logo a bit too far to the side, making it end up underneath the arm and not in view. Something to remember for next time.

The last 3 days we got to enjoy the actual VRDays. I got to talk with plenty of people at our stand

I got to watch a few talks about the current state of XR gaming, haptics and their usage in experiences and how we need to lure people out of their own comfortable home with fancy tech they don’t have at home. I got a shift in perspective after a talk explaining why we should not replicate the real world, but make it bigger: think creatively!

I learned some tips about building a portfolio containing as many experiments as possible to get into the XR market, listened to a talk about immersive creativity and how we as designers can get started in this fresh, new market and last but not least I listened to a talk about VR in e-sports.

These talks taught me some very valuable things: mainly that I become super enthusiastic about location-based VR experiences. Not simply a mainstream game, but something extra being added to it. I would love to explore in the future how to build a unique experience, simply using my Arduino knowledge, for example.

Next week I will get to experiment with Unity3D and the building of AR and XR games/experiences in it: I am incredibly enthusiastic about it, and can’t wait to see what we can come up with.
I will also be experimenting with ShapesXR, a tool recommended to me for its quick prototypes in AR and apparently a very valuable tool to designers. We will see what this week brings!
Let’s go!
